About Venice Musicale

The very first official meeting of the Cecilian Music Society was October 4, 1951 at the home of Susan Hauser.  The founding members were Emily Hightower, Susan Hauser, Johanna Maier, Ruth Higel, Sonya Terry, Betty Arnall, Mrs. Barry Wimbish, and Mrs. H. L. Mandy.  Johanna Maier was elected the Club's first president.  The Club was chartered by Mrs. Walter Rowe Thompson, of the Sarasota Club, and Mrs. J.L. Cardwell of the Bradenton Club.  The Club dedicated itself to "music education, and the National Federation of Music Clubs, and formed the traditions of reciting poems, songs and prayers during the course of their meetings.

Later the Club would have three levels of membership – active, Honorary, and patron, and to have many mainstays in the organization like the Rainbow Chorus, the 3 Junior Music Clubs, the Ensemble, the Speaking Choir and later the Encore group, which still exists today, and is a source for raising money to fund our music scholarship program.  One of the main functions of this club has always been to further musical education through scholarships for young area musicians.  The club has awarded thousands of dollars of scholarships over the years, and have funded many students on their road to a musical experience through summer camps and college scholarships.  The other main function of the organization is to provide area residents with a venue to perform and listen to fine music, and to interact with other music lovers in the South Sarasota County area.

Today, the organization has renamed itself the Venice Musicale, is non-sectarian, and has a non-profit status.  The group meets from October through April, on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Jacaranda Public Library, 4143 Woodmere Park Boulevard, Venice, FL at 10:00 AM.  Following the meeting, the club offers musical programs which vary from classical to dance, to show tunes, to instrumental, from composers both American and European.  Our programs are free and open to the public, and enjoyed by all.  Donations to the Scholarship Fund are gratefully received.
